CHAPTER ONE
Northumbia, England - Spring, 1069

"Synnove, did you hear me?  You must make haste!"

      "No."

"No?" repeated Aelynth amazed and gasping to catch her breath after venturing through the blustery elements and up the stairs to her lady’s chamber.  "“Whatever can you mean?  Surely you can feel the cold, dark tempest that is swirling toward us!"

Aye, Synnove thought to herself.  Indeed she had dreamt of nothing else for nearly a fortnight.  She knew it was neither cold nor dark nor wind she had dreamt of, or feared.  Her apprehension was due to another force of nature.  A dark stranger, who descended upon her in the early hours of morning and engulfed her senses like a powerful, unexpected storm.  A tall, broad shadow that did not chill her dreams, but brought heat unlike any she had ever known.  She may not yet know his face, but she knew who he was.  He was her destiny.  Her independent nature rebelled against the knowledge.  And her desire to fully understand the meaning of her dreams brought frustration.  For although she could sense fate, she could not completely know it.  Whether this man brought salvation or sin, life or death, she could not say.
